Religion knows no borders! The “One Buddha One World” Buddhist international organization, jointly initiated by Taiwan’s Ven. Shih Da Hui from Guang Xiu Zen Monastery, Sri Lanka’s Ven. Anurudda Thero, and Ven. Miao Tsan from Vairochana Zen Monastery in the United States, was grandly established today (31st) in the Buddhist nation of Sri Lanka.
“One Buddha One World” underwent more than three years of transnational preparation, with Buddhist organizations and representatives from 23 countries including Taiwan, Japan, Vietnam, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, the United States, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Bhutan, and China jointly establishing the organization. Over 300 senior monks and Buddhist representatives from various countries gathered in Sri Lanka to jointly hold the founding assembly.
The opening ceremony commenced with a solemn and magnificent auspicious chanting, accompanied by traditional Sri Lankan Kandyan dance. Ven. Shih Da Hui and Ven. Anurudda Thero led the assembly of senior monks into the venue side by side, creating a sacred atmosphere filled with Dharma joy.
Ven. Shih Da Hui, the inaugural Chairman of the Assembly, stated that “One Buddha One World” originates from the principle that “there is only one truth, and there is only one Buddha and Dharma; although transmitted throughout the world and integrated with different cultural backgrounds to form various Buddhist traditions, the Buddha remains the same, and every person has Buddha within their heart.” The Dharma knows no national boundaries, and through this international organization, the Dharma will be propagated globally, benefiting all sentient beings regardless of race or age.
Ven. Shih Da Hui announced three objectives: first, to propagate the Dharma worldwide by translating Buddhist scriptures into various languages through the organizational platform and promoting them in different countries; second, to utilize modern cutting-edge technology such as AI to cultivate Dharma propagation talents who will spread the teachings worldwide; third, to apply the Buddhist teaching of Six Harmonious Principles, contributing each country’s expertise and sharing through dana (generosity) with other nations, ensuring all people and sentient beings enjoy merit and blessings, cultivating both wisdom and merit for the benefit of all.
Host nation Sri Lanka’s Ven. Anurudda Thero, who serves as founding Secretary-General and previously studied in Taiwan, expressed in Chinese his happiness that monks from 23 countries came to Sri Lanka to join One Buddha One World, stating “the entire Buddhist community is one family, and we work together.” He particularly thanked Ven. Miao Tsan from the United States and Ven. Shih Da Hui from Taiwan, noting that through the transmission of Buddhist scriptures, Buddhists worldwide can become more unified.
Dr. William Chang, who also serves as founding Secretary-General, stated that having been engaged in international Buddhist promotion for many years, he believes “we have a historical mission and calling to spread Buddhism globally; this is Taiwan’s mission in the Dharma realm.”
The assembly also unveiled the Sinhala versions of the “Platform Sutra by the Sixth Patriarch” and the “Diamond Sutra” published by the professional translation team of master’s and doctoral degree holders led by Ven. Miao Tsan, which were received by a representative appointed by the Sri Lankan President. Ven. Shih Da Hui brought from Taiwan 100 hand-calligraphed fans inscribed with “Cultivate Vast Positive Causality,” decorated with Sri Lanka’s national flower to represent the Buddha’s realm, inviting senior monks from various countries to sign together, symbolizing the transmission of goodness through goodness and the cultivation of extensive positive connections. Additionally, he prepared calligraphy works, Taiwan high mountain tea, and Mahavairocana crystal Buddha statues to form positive connections with monastic leaders from various countries, creating a warm and enthusiastic atmosphere.
